It started with a heavy sigh and a phrase that felt like a tiny dagger to my mama-heart: “You just don’t trust me.” If you are the parent of a tween, you know that the “phone conversation” isn’t just a one-time chat. It’s a repetitive, marathon-style negotiation that usually picks up speed right around the 12th or 13th birthday. My husband and I had always stood our ground on waiting as long as possible before getting her one. 16 sounded like a safe, distant number where she’d magically be mature enough to handle the digital jungle. But as more of our daughter’s middle school friends started showing up with iPhones, the pressure at home reached a boiling point. I could feel our relationship straining under the weight of her frustration and our own fear of the unknown. I realized then that we didn’t have a trust problem. We had a communication problem, and what we really needed was a phone contract for kids to bridge the gap.

We knew we weren’t ready to hand over a fully connected smartphone yet, but simply saying “wait” without a plan was making us the villains in her story. I needed a way to show her that our rules weren’t about control, but about preparation. That’s when the idea of a device contract really clicked. We needed something tangible and fair. And something that provided a clear roadmap so she didn’t have to wonder when the “no” would finally turn into a “yes.”

Why a Phone Contract for Kids Works Better Than Rules

When we stopped viewing these expectations as a set of strict rules, we shifted to viewing them as a collaborative agreement. A phone contract for kids serves a much higher purpose than just keeping them off TikTok at 2:00 AM. It creates buy-in. When we sat down with our daughter, it wasn’t a lecture; it was a meeting where she was a stakeholder. We handed her the draft and let her read it, digest it, and even suggest her own revisions. We wanted her to see that this agreement was built on a foundation of trust, respect, and balance rather than just a list of things she couldn’t do.

By documenting our concerns—like the addictive nature of certain apps or the importance of sleep—she began to understand that our hesitation wasn’t about her character, but about the technology itself. The most powerful part of this process was including a path to a phone. We committed to a specific date for her first smartphone, which immediately took the daily pressure off all of us. She stopped asking when it would happen because she had it in writing. And we stopped feeling like we were constantly moving the goalposts.

What We Include in Our Family Device Contract

Our current contract is divided into sections that grow as she does. Starting with her current tech—which includes an Apple Watch and an iPad for school. One of the first things we did to show good faith was to remove the existing downtime and app restrictions we had previously set. We told her that this was a privilege reflecting our belief that she was ready for more responsibility. It felt like a bit of a leap for us, but it was essential to show her that we were serious about trusting her to manage her own time.

However, we remained very firm on screen time rules tweens often struggle with, specifically regarding short-form video content. Our agreement explicitly states that platforms like YouTube Shorts, TikTok, and Instagram Reels are not permitted on any device. We explained to her that research shows these formats are designed to be addictive and can negatively affect the focus and well-being of developing brains.

Another non-negotiable in our house is the kitchen charging rule. Every single night, all devices must be placed on the kitchen charging station by an agreed-upon bedtime. We are huge believers that sleep matters more than any screen. Along with this, we’ve established that devices aren’t welcome during family meals or conversations unless we specifically permit them. The goal is to ensure that screen time never takes priority over homework, chores, or family connection.

Perhaps the most unique part of our contract is the work requirement. To get a phone on her 14th birthday, she must hold a summer job. We want her to learn the value of earning, responsibility, and independence, which are all qualities that go hand-in-hand with owning a smartphone. If she can handle this responsibility, we feel much more confident that she can handle the responsibility of a data plan.

The agreement also outlines exactly what happens if trust is broken. We’ve agreed that the first step is always a family conversation, not an immediate punishment. And that repeated violations can lead to restrictions put in place or the temporary loss of the device.

Tips for the Conversation

If you’re ready to introduce a contract, my biggest piece of advice is to make it a collaboration, not a confrontation. Don’t spring it on them during a tense moment. Instead give them a heads up and schedule a “family meeting. Start by acknowledging the things they are doing well and explain your “why” behind the rules.

When kids understand that a rule exists to protect their sleep or their mental health—rather than just to “be mean”—they are much more likely to respect it. Most importantly, commit to reviewing the agreement regularly. We’ve set a date to revisit ours every year on our daughter’s birthday. As she grows and proves she can handle her current level of freedom, the trust and her independence will grow right along with her.

Building a Digital Future Together

I realized through all this, that you don’t have to be a perfect parent to navigate the digital world. But you do have to be a proactive one. Transitioning from a state of constant conflict to a state of clear expectations has changed the entire energy of our home.

Communication is the bridge that turns a screen from a source of stress into a tool for connection. If you’ve been feeling that strain in your relationship, I highly encourage you to sit down and put a plan on paper. It’s not about controlling their every move; it’s about giving them the guardrails they need to eventually drive on their own. Start the conversation today and watch how much more smoothly the phone journey becomes when everyone is reading from the same script.

When my friends asked what I wanted to do for my 40th birthday, I had one answer: Charleston. A long weekend, the best group of women I know, and a city that manages to be equal parts charming, energetic, and delicious. We chose to go during Valentine’s Day weekend, and it worked perfectly for a girls weekend.

If you’re dreaming of a girls’ trip that blends Southern hospitality with seriously good food, rooftop cocktails and rich history, this guide is for you. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, planning a Galentine’s Day getaway, or simply need a long weekend with your people, Charleston in February is an underrated gem you need to know about.

Why February in Charleston is Actually Perfect

Most people don’t think of February as prime travel season. But Charleston in winter is a well-kept secret, and honestly, I think we experienced it at its absolute best.

Think light jacket or sweater during the day. Comfortable enough to stroll King Street without sweating and cool enough to enjoy an afternoon cocktail at a rooftop bar. At night a jacket or coat is comfortable and flat boots dress you up while keeping you comfortable for walking.

February also means you get to lean into the Galentine’s theme in the most fun and girly way.

Where to Stay in Charleston for a Girls’ Trip

For a group trip, renting a house is the way to go. We stayed in an adorable pink house within walking distance of some of our favorite spots. It was so nice having a common space to decompress, pregame, and play games together on the last night—which was one of the highlights of the whole trip.

Our Recommendation: Rent a House

Look for rentals in the Cannonborough-Elliotborough or Harleston Village neighborhoods. For a group of 6–10, splitting a house will likely come out cheaper than hotel rooms, too, and adds so much more to the experience. Our house was on Line Street and the location was great. Even a 20 minute walk to lunch one day felt super safe and doable in the gorgeous weather.

Hotel Alternatives:

If a house isn’t your vibe, Charleston has no shortage of stunning hotels to choose from. When looking for a place to stay, location matters so much, since the city is very pedestrian-friendly. Here are a few options depending on your budget and preferred experience, from high-end luxury to classic Southern hospitality.

The Splurge: Hotel Bennett or The Dewberry

On the higher end of the budget are Hotel Bennett and The Dewberry, ranging from $500-$900+ a night. You can’t beat the location of either of these, both overlooking Marion Square, right off King Street (The Bennett) and Meeting Street (The Dewberry). Both offer award-winning dining, historic architecture and rooftop bars.

The More Budget-Friendly: The Francis Marion Hotel

Not far away from those luxury options, is the Francis Marion Hotel which offers a more accessible price point without sacrificing the “prime” location. (Nightly rates range from $220-$450/night). A favorite for its 1920s elegance and a historic landmark named after Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion.

The Bed & Breakfast: The Nicholas

If a more private, bed and breakfast is the experience you’re looking for, check out The Nicholas. Located in the moss-draped Harleston Village two blocks off Lower King Street, it’s a reimagined 1798 house, with 9 rooms and a private plunge pool. With rates ranging from $290-$499 per night, it offers a more intimate, local touch and includes an “Epicurean Grab+Go” breakfast.

Our 3-Day Charleston Girls’ Trip Itinerary

Before I dive into the best restaurants, bars and nightlife in Charleston, here’s exactly how we spent our long weekend, straight from the itinerary that kept us on track. And having the time of our lives.

Day 1 – Thursday — Arrival & Party Vibes

6:00 AM –We were coming from Central Florida, so we loaded up the mini-van and drove up super early in the morning. It’s about a 6 hour drive so we wanted to get there in time for a late lunch.

3:00 PM – We arrived at our house, chose our rooms and unpacked a bit before heading out to our first stop of the day, Bay Street Biergarten. We walked there from our place, which wasn’t long, however it we thought we took a wrong turn at one point. Once we got there, though, the food, service and atmosphere was great.

6:00 PM – From there, we kept things casual and took a ride-share to Edmund’s Oast brewery for craft beers and good vibes. We kept it going into the night at a recommended local bar that was walking distance from our house called the Recovery Room. Now that was an unexpected good time. I love when a good “see where the night takes you” works out.

Day 2 – Friday — Cheers & Chills

10:00 AM – First thing was first, Trucker Hat Roulette! If you’ve seen this on Instagram you know. Everyone wore all black, grabbed a mystery trucker hat, and spent the day in them. It sounds ridiculous, but it was hilarious. Ten out of ten, would recommend creating your own ridiculous group tradition.

12:00 PM – We took a stroll down to Brown Dog Deli for lunch and it was exactly what we were craving. Amazing sandwiches, all too good sounding to choose. I went with a French Onion Grilled Cheese and it was divine.

3:00 PM – Afterwards, we explored King Street, found a few rooftop bars and explored until we were ready for a break.

6:30 PM – Dinner reservations at Church and Union.

9:00 PM – Then, walking distance from the restaurant was the meeting place for our Haunted Ghost Tour.

Day 3 – Saturday — Galentine’s Day

11:00 AM – Saturday was Valentine’s Day, and we dressed like it. We all got dolled up in our reds, pinks and whites and headed out to Iron Rose for brunch.

1:00 PM – Then, we strolled in the gorgeous weather to see Rainbow Row and the Pineapple Fountain. What’s great about Charleston with such a large group, is everyone was able to walk off and do what they wanted when there wasn’t something planned. I kept the itinerary light, for those who wanted to explore more historical sites, head home for some downtime, or bar hop.

7:00 PM – We all had a big drive home the next day, so we spent some quality time in our adorable house—face masks on, Thai food ordered, and hilarious card games played. And somehow, Dirty Dancing ended up coming on and we all watched (while some of us performed dance routines for the group). It was the perfect ending to a perfect trip.

The Best Restaurants in Charleston for a Girls’ Trip

Three days in Charleston is definitely not enough time to enjoy all the foods it has to offer, but we did a pretty good job while we were there. Here are all the restaurants we visited and a few others that are highly rated from our list.

Church and Union

This was my big birthday dinner location, and it absolutely lived up to the occasion. It’s a church turned restaurant and the vibe was on point. The food was absolutely amazing, one of the best dishes I’ve ever had. Featuring Modern-American cuisine and crafted cocktails it’s definitely special occasion worthy. Make sure to book in advance (and request the main dining room)—this one fills up fast.

Iron Rose

Iron Rose was our go to for Brunch on Valentine’s Day. The ambiance was perfect for what we were looking for and the mimosas were flowing. They have a really pretty courtyard area as well that we took full advantage of for photos.

Edmund’s Oast Craft Brewery

One of our unexpected favorites from the trip. If you’re willing to take a very short uber to this brewery, it’s worth it. The atmosphere is great, the beers were delicious and there’s a great menu if you need to grab a bite. And for those who aren’t beer fans, they have a full bar.

Bay Street Biergarten

I took a bit of a risk adding this place to the agenda, as it’s off the beaten path, but I’m so glad I did. The vibe of this place was exactly what I was looking for as our first stop in Charleston after a long drive. Local feel, tons of outdoor seating, and craft beer. And the food—wow. We opted for a bunch of apps and they were incredible.

Brown Dog Deli

If you are a sandwich lover, like me, this is a must add to your itinerary. The menu had sandwiches like Apple Butter Jeans (a pressed panini with turkey, ham, bacon jam, apple butter, brie spread, and arugula) and Totes Ma G.O.A.T.S (Boar’s Head Cajun Turkey, hot honey whipped goat, fig preserves, caramelized onion aioli, fontina, roma tomatoes and arugula.) We had a very hard time deciding what to order, and yes multiple bites were shared across orders.

Basic Kitchen

Basic Kitchen is a great option for those seeking a more health-conscious menu. They focus on using seasonal, local produce to create food that’s nourishing and delicious. We didn’t make it there this trip, but next time I am there it will be a go to for lunch.

Millers All Day

Millers All Day was my second option for brunch with the girls. With a more casual atmosphere, it wasn’t the Vday vibe I was going for, but it has great reviews. They also don’t take reservations, so check the wait time and plan ahead with this one.

Charleston’s Rooftop Bars & Nightlife Scene

Ok the Charleston nightlife scene is exceptional. From sophisticated rooftops to dive bars, there’s something for everyone. Here are the all the places we went on our trip and they are all worth a visit.

The Ritual

Located in the heart of Downtown Charleston, off King and Calhoun St., the rooftop has a beautiful view of the bridge and Marion Square. On a sunny February afternoon, this spot makes for the perfect location to lounge on the rooftop with a delicious cocktail.

The Recovery Room

You know you’ve found a great dive bar when it doesn’t even have a website. On our first night, we were recommended this bar from a local after they learned where our house was located. Just a short 10 minute walk down the street, it quickly became one of our favorite spots. Pool tables, cheap drinks, a DJ playing all the hits, and late night trivia? I mean you can’t beat it. We could not have asked for a better first night to kick off the trip. (And we won second place in trivia!)

The Citrus Club

The Citrus Club is a seriously classy joint. Located on the 8th floor of The Dewberry, it’s the highest rooftop in Charleston. With gorgeous views of Marion Square and the Charleston Harbor, it earned a permanent spot in our hearts. Especially when we tried the Wölffer Estate Dry Rosé Cider. If you are not a cider person, this will convert you. Bright, dry, perfectly effervescent, and absolutely iconic for a Valentine’s weekend girls’ trip.

Burns Alley Tavern

Tucked directly behind the YETI store on King Street, this little dive was a hidden gem. And we discovered it by asking the sales clerk at YETI what his favorite bar was. It’s the perfect counterpoint to the rooftop bars and a reminder that the best moments on a girls’ trip are often the spontaneous ones. I also have to shout out the YETI store for making it on our favorite bars list. The shopping experience was on point, with live music and a free whiskey tasting while you shop.

Henry’s on the Market

Henry’s on the Market was recommended to us by some locals as a great place for live entertainment. It’s a 4 story venue with a different band on each one. Be prepared to pay the rich $20 cover to get in, but it’s a place you can definitely stay at all night. The top floor was a legit concert venue and the entertainment was worth it.

Activities & Sightseeing in Charleston

Between the eating and drinking, Charleston has plenty to keep a group of women entertained, charmed, and slightly spooked.

King Street Shopping

King Street is the main street and an absolutely essential part of a Charleston visit. It’s hard to miss and it’s filled with a good mix of national retailers and locally-owned boutiques. Window shopping is a blast, but there are also so many fun bars and restaurants to tuck into as well.

The Haunted Ghost Tour

Charleston is considered one of the most haunted cities in America, and the ghost tours take that reputation very seriously. It’s the perfect combination of informative history and wonderfully spooky storytelling. Highly recommend booking in advance, and the after dinner walk was perfectly timed.

Rainbow Row, The Battery & Pineapple Fountain

No Charleston trip is complete without the sightseeing classics. Rainbow Row—the iconic stretch of pastel-colored historic homes, The Battery offering gorgeous waterfront views and the Pineapple Fountain which makes for the best group photo of the whole trip.

Walking tip: Downtown Charleston is extremely walkable. If you’re staying near King Street, you can cover Rainbow Row, The Battery, Waterfront Park, and back to King Street all on foot in a few hours. Wear comfortable shoes, though, the cobblestones are gorgeous but unforgiving.

Carriage Tour

Even though we didn’t get to fit this in, a carriage tour is one of Charleston’s most iconic experiences. These horse-drawn rides take you through the historic district all while sharing stories about the city’s history and architecture. Tours typically last about an hour and no two rides are exactly the same. It’s definitely at the top of our “next time” list for a slower, more immersive way to see the city.

City Market

We didn’t make it here on this trip, but the City Market is one of Charleston’s most well-known spots. Stretching several blocks, it’s home to dozens of local vendors selling everything from handmade goods to art and classic Lowcountry souvenirs.

The Perfect Charleston Girls’ Trip for Valentine’s Weekend

Charleston has a way of making you feel like time slows down. The streets are beautiful, the food is extraordinary, the history is everywhere you look, and the people are genuinely warm. February, with its mild weather, quieter crowds, and Valentine’s energy, might actually be the best possible time to experience it.

Whether you’re celebrating a milestone birthday, planning a Galentine’s Day escape, or just overdue for a trip with your closest friends, Charleston will exceed every expectation. Start planning, book your house, make your reservations, and get yourself to King Street as soon as humanly possible.

I celebrated turning 40 in one of the most beautiful cities in America, surrounded by my favorite women in the world. That’s the kind of birthday that doesn’t need a bow on it—it’s already perfect.

Happy Friday! I cannot believe that it is almost the end of March. How is it already Q2 and basically almost summer? I’ve decided to change my Fab Five Friday schedule to monthly at the end of the month. And because Spring is in full swing I’m featuring five of my all time favorite spring/summer, outdoor, poolside favorites! So if you are ready to bask in the warmth of the summer sun, hit the beach or pool, you have to read on for these must have favorites.

1. Hawaiian Tropic Weightless Face Sunscreen

Every spring or summer I always need to reup on my favorite face sunscreen. It’s very light and gives you a beautiful glow. I’ve never had any kind of irritation and it will usually last me all summer. It’s a must have in my pool and beach bag.

2. Target Sandals

I am obsessed with these $12 sandals from target. They are waterproof, perfect for beach and pool days and are so comfortable. I never have to worry about them getting ruined or dirty because they are so cheap, too. Soccer fields? No problem. Beach sand? Falls right out! They are the best.

3. Best Hat for Pool or Beach

I have posted about this hat so many times, but I can’t rave about it enough. Its so durable even when getting wet in the pool. It’s foldable so it is easy to pack. And it looks great on everyone. They have multiple colors as well. Must check it out!

4. Beach Blanket

This beach blanket is perfect for long days on the sand. In fact I just used this last weekend on a trip to Amelia Island. It fit 4 adults and what is really neat about it, is that it’s weighted down by filling the corners up with sand. So easy and convenient.

5. Wolffer No.139 Dry Rose Hard Cider

We discovered this delicious rosé cider while on my birthday trip in Charleston and they had it at a brewery we visited in Amelia Island as well. It’s a great choice for anyone who doesn’t love beer and want something refreshing and delicious. It’s pretty high in alcohol so you don’t need too many, but it is now one of my favorite refreshing cocktails for a day outside.

I hope you enjoyed this month’s Fab Five Friday! Have a great weekend!

Here’s a quick snapshot before we get into the nitty-gritty.

Factor

Nutré

Formerly Factor 75, now owned by HelloFresh. Fresh meals with exceptional macro labelling, a strong focus on calorie control, and a loyal customer base who swear by the flavor and transparency.

Price Comparison: What Will It Actually Cost You?

Let’s talk money — because nobody wants to fall in love with a service and then quietly cry at the checkout. Both use a sliding scale: the more meals you order per week, the less you pay per meal.

Plan Size

Factor

Nutré

5-6 meals a week

$15.49/meal (6 total)

$14.25/meal (5 total)

10 meals a week

$13.99/meal

$13.49/meal

15-16 meals a week

$12.99/meal (16 total)

$12.59/meal (15 total)

20 meals a week

$12.99/meal

$12.09/meal

Shipping

$12.99

$10.99

Weekly Meal Cost (10 meals)

~$152.89

~$145.89

Both brands are very close in pricing and because of the sliding scale, you can see how the pricing model shifts the more meals you add to the cart.

Money-Saving Tip
Both services run regular new customer promos. Always check for a promo code before you subscribe — it’s almost always there.

Nutrition Tip
If you’re managing blood pressure, heart health, or a calorie deficit, pay close attention to sodium and total calories on Factor’s higher-end meals. Nutré tends to run leaner by design — it’s kind of their whole thing.

Taste & Real Customer Experience

Okay, nutrition labels are great, but let’s be honest — if the food doesn’t taste good, no one is sticking with it. Here’s what people (myself included) are actually saying:

Factor

Nutré

Flavor-packed meals that genuinely impress

Big on flavor despite lower calories

Huge menu variety — rotates weekly

“Protein plus” options help meet fitness goals

Dietitian support & transparent nutrition

Beloved by the fitness & macro-tracking crowd

Praised by major outlets (Good Housekeeping, Healthline, NY Post)

Clear, trustworthy nutritional labelling

Some meals can be “mushy” — texture varies

Portions can feel small (intentional for calorie control)

Many meals fall in the 700–1000mg sodium range

Compared to Factor’s national infrastructure, Nutre feels more “local”

My Honest Take

Both genuinely surprised me with taste — I was expecting “healthy = bland” and got proven wrong. Factor felt more like a restaurant meal, very filling, good portions and very flavorful. Nutré felt much more calorie conscious and smaller portions, but still very flavorful. Quality of ingredients across both were very good. Delivery and logistics could be tricky some times with timing and packaging so you need to plan accordingly for both, but that comes with the territory of meal delivery services.

The Verdict

Neither is “the best.” The right choice depends entirely on what you’re trying to achieve, your budget and your routine. A meal delivery service is a great option if you are starting off on a health food journey, need help in the kitchen in order to eat healthy, short on time but still have goals to meet, or just ready to try something different.

If a meal delivery service is something that fits into your budget, both Factor and Nutré are great options. Factor may be more well-known, offer more variety and pack a flavorful punch, whereas Nutré is more macros friendly and has a more local audience. There are plenty of meals between the two that could help introduce some new flavors into your day-to-day.

Ready to Give One a Try?

Both services offer new customer discounts — so make sure to take advantage if you are trying them out for the first time. It’s a great way to switch things up at a much cheaper price point. Click the links below to browse their current menus and find the plan that fits your lifestyle.

You know it’s pretty cliché but I am going to say it anyways: time goes by way too fast. Here I am writing my first Fab Five Friday post of the year. THE YEAR! It’s so funny because I had so many big ideas and goals for my blog this year, I just didn’t get far enough to write it down. January is always a time that I embrace as a fresh start and document everything. Usually, I’m looking for something different or new—a hobby, a goal, an achievement, a fitness routine, a date with friends, and so on. But this year, I’ll be honest with you, it just didn’t happen.

I’ll tell you that this year was a huge milestone birthday for me (I turned 40, shhhh!) It’s actually fine, I am fully embracing it. I just realized that I am so happy. Why change something that is perfectly where I need to be right now?

I’m not searching for my people, trying to fit in—I’m surrounded by the best friends and family I could ever imagine. We say it all the time that building these friendships through the growth of our kids has been so wonderful and we couldn’t imagine doing this thing called parenting without each other.

I’m not looking for a way to revamp my fitness routine—I’m loving what I have going on right now with getting workouts in first thing in the am (listening to my body and when I can) and using the Ladder app to build my routines. I don’t have to think about what I’m going to do at the gym and it’s been working for me. I’ve never felt stronger as I enter my 40s.

The kids are keeping us busier than ever—soccer tournaments, dance competitions, football championships, school events and everything in between. And I cannot complain about it at all. I know this is only a season in our lives and if they love it, I’m down for all the things. When I think about the time I have left with Rylee before she graduates high school, it blows my mind. So I’ll be enjoying every single moment—from band concerts to honor roll ceremonies to solo dance rehearsals and beyond.

I’ve got a lot on my plate with work and PTO duties, and so adding more goals and hobbies to my plate just doesn’t make sense. I’m enjoying what I can do now and doing a kick ass job at it, so I’m not going to add more to my plate. So, long story short, I say all of this because the blog is still a huge passion of mine, and I’m still working through what that looks like for me this year. How I am going to put content out that I am proud of, help people where I can, and simply brighten someone’s day. Just know that I am still here, and still planning on doing big things, I’m just letting life do it’s thing and time is definitely not in my favor. But I am super excited to be back and sharing my Fab Five Friday! So let’s get to it!

1. The New Couple in 5b

Starting off with the first book I read this year, The New Couple in 5b. You know when you just grab something off the shelf at the library and cross your fingers its a good one? (Do people still go to the library?) Well that’s exactly what I did and I was so happy with the choice. It kick started this year of reading off with a page-turner and I am feeling really, really good about books this year. Definitely recommend this for an easy read!

Since this is my first Fab Five of the year, I do have to catch you up on some amazing seasonal events. We participated in our annual Chili Cookoff in January and got second place People’s Choice! We’ve put so much seasoning, love, and dedication into this event over the years and loved being able to bring back a trophy.

And in February, Reece’s soccer team won their tournament. Reece was the captain that weekend and he was able to take home the trophy!

Rylee had her first dance competition of the season where she performed her solo routine. We are so proud of her in every sense! You know I had the biggest mama nerves, but she crushed it!

We have had this on our ists to do for so long and finally found a free weekend in February to fit it in. It was such a beautiful day and the strawberries were absolutely divine. I was worried that we got too many, but between me and the kids we finished our entire batch within the week! I hghly recommend heading out to Southern Hill Farms and pick some berries before it gets too hot, it’s such a great family activity!

I have to shout out these delicious protein pancakes. Made with mashed bananas, Orgain Protein Powder, egg whites and a splash of almond milk. They are so delicious and a great way to get a protein packed breaky in that’s easy and delicious. Top it with berries and a bit of pure maple syrup and wala! I have a discount code for Orgain Proten Powder, 20% at this link. This is definitely one of my go-tos when I want to switch things up!

Use code JANE-BDF at checkout.

Have you guys seen this?! I was debating getting one of these for the longest time and I finally did. It’s a serious game changer. No more splashing the sauce around to shred with two forks. It took less than 2 seconds to shred chicken for some tacos I was making and zero effort at all. This thing is a must have for anyone who shreds chicken or pork or anything like that. Check it out!

Thank you so much for stopping by. Have a wonderful Friday and fantastic weekend!

Now that we are officially settled into 2026, how are those resolutions holding up? Be honest.

We’ve all been there. You start the new year with high hopes—a list of to-dos, a vague plan to “eat better,” and a desire to finally get organized. But by the end of the first week, life has happened. The planning has fallen short, the motivation has evaporated, and you’re feeling more scattered than when you started.

You may have even bought a beautiful, new yearly planner hoping it would magically organize your life, but those generic planners often fall short. The problem? Those planners are rigid. They force you to retrofit your thoughts, notes, and unique schedule into their boxes. If you miss a week, you have wasted pages staring back at you, guilt-tripping you into quitting altogether.

You don’t need a planner that dictates your life, you need a system that adapts to it.

That’s exactly why I created The Wellness Reset Planner—a thoughtfully curated system that doesn’t just track your habits and goals, but guides you through them with intention, support, and a rhythm you’ll want to return to every day.

Why You Need a Reset (Not Just Another To-Do List)

The Wellness Reset Planner is different because it helps you build routines based on your goals and lifestyle—without the pressure to fill every hour of your day like most planners demand.

It follows a simple, flexible rhythm called the RESET Method, built on the idea that you don’t need a rigid plan—you need a sustainable practice you can return to and build upon.

The RESET Method stands for:

Reflect: Pause and check in. Where are you right now?

Establish: Create simple routines and habits that realistically support your life.

Support: Fuel your body, energy, and mindset in ways that feel sustainable.

Evaluate: Notice what’s working and what feels hard.

Tweak: Make small changes instead of quitting. Progress comes from refinement, not perfection.

By basing your routines and daily practices around thoughtful goals, you can build healthy habits that actually stick. This planner allows you to plan your days alongside your real responsibilities—work, parenting, and all the other to-dos that matter.

What You Get in The Wellness Reset Planner Instant Download

The Wellness Reset Planner lets you customize the way you plan your goals and routines. Designed at 8.5×11” with a clean, minimal aesthetic, it prints beautifully at home on standard printer paper.

The kit includes 22 printable pages to help you build your own system:

For the Big Picture: A Vision Board and Yearly Goals layout to map out your 2026 strategy.

For Daily Focus: To-do lists and Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Planners to organize your time.

For Health & Home: A Meal Planner with grocery list, a Workout Planner with body-focus tracking, and a Chore Chart.

For Consistency: Habit Trackers to monitor your morning, afternoon, and evening routines.

For Mindset & Self-Care: A Daily Journal with gratitude prompts, focus points, and a mood tracker—plus a fun 30-Day Self-Care Challenge to help keep your cup full.

My Personal Hack: How I Build the Ultimate Custom Planner

I don’t just design these pages—I rely on them to keep my own chaos under control. Over the years, I’ve learned that a planner I build myself is the only thing that truly works.

Here’s exactly how I use The Wellness Reset Planner to run my life:

My base: I use a disc-bound Happy Planner because it allows full customization and flexibility.

My sections: I create tabbed sections for Goals, Weekly Planning, Parenting, Blog, School, and Health & Fitness.

I print what I need: Instead of generic filler paper, I print the exact sheets that match each section—Weekly Workout Planners for Fitness, Chore Charts for Parenting, and so on.

The secret weapon: A disc-compatible hole punch lets me snap my printed pages right into my planner.

This system gives me the best of both worlds: the structure of a bound planner with the freedom to customize everything inside.

Stop Buying Planners That Don’t Fit

If you’re tired of abandoning planners by February because they don’t “fit” your life, it’s time to build one that does.

For just $5, you can download The Wellness Reset Planner today. You’ll have the file forever—meaning you can print a fresh Habit Tracker or Goal Planner whenever you need a reset, whether that’s tomorrow or six months from now.

Your goals for 2026 deserve a plan that actually supports them. Let’s make this the year we stop fizzling out and start following through.

When Brett and I got married, we made a promise—not just to each other, but to our future kids—that they’d grow up knowing both of our traditions. I was raised Jewish, Brett was raised Catholic, and together we decided to create a home where both Hanukkah and Christmas could shine.

And honestly? It’s been such a gift.

Every December, our kids get the glow of menorah candles and the sparkle of Christmas lights. We celebrate Hanukkah with my parents, Christmas with Brett’s parents, and squeeze in our own little family rituals too. The key for us has been keeping each holiday distinct, so they both feel special—and never like one is competing with the other.

But more importantly for us, is the culture. It’s about our history, and teaching our kids that celebrating more than one tradition makes them richer. We want them to grow up seeing diversity as something beautiful, something to respect and embrace—not something to fear.

A Simple Guide for Interfaith Families

There seems to be a growing number of parents raising their children in interfaith homes, and there’s really no wrong way to do it. What’s important is to focus on whatever works best for your family. But if you’re curious, here’s a peek into how we make it all work (with a little laughter, a lot of love, and maybe too many latkes).

Keep the Holidays Distinct (But Both Magical)

One tip for interfaith families is to remember that Hanukkah and Christmas are separate holidays that shouldn’t compete with each other. Each celebration carries its own special meaning and traditions.

With Hanukkah, we go all in: lighting the menorah every night with my parents, singing blessings, frying up latkes until the house smells like heaven, and playing dreidel (my kids get very competitive over those chocolate gelt coins).

Then, we travel to Brett’s parents house and slip into full Christmas mode with his family. Think stockings with our names on them, extended-family chaos on Christmas Eve, and Christmas morning in matching pajamas while we sip coffee and hand out presents.

By making both holidays distinct, our kids never feel like one is overshadowing the other—and honestly, it makes December feel like one long, sparkly celebration.

Find the Magic They Share

This doesn’t mean they can’t intermingle in some ways. We don’t spend a lot of energy trying to separate every single detail. For instance, we have Hanukkah ornaments on our Christmas tree, decorate our golf cart to honor both holidays, and have even brought our menorah to Brett’s parents to sing the prayer and light the candles when the two holidays overlapped.

There are also so many similarities between Christmas and Hanukkah. Both holidays celebrate light, togetherness, love and perseverance.

And here’s the thing: when our children see that two very different traditions can share common values, they learn something bigger. They learn that cultures—even ones that don’t look or sound the same—often carry the same heart. That’s a lesson I hope stays with them long after the last candle and ornament are put away.

Talk About It (and Let Kids Ask)

Children are naturally curious about their dual heritage. Another tip for interfaith families is to talk openly about how Mom and Dad have different religions and explain the significance of each tradition. So, along with the fun, we also tell the stories. The Maccabees. The Nativity. We want our kids to know that holidays aren’t just “about the gifts”—they’re about remembering history, honoring traditions, and appreciating the values that shape who we are.

Our kids know Mom is Jewish and Dad is Catholic, and we’ve always kept that conversation open. They ask questions and we answer honestly in ways they can understand. (There are a lot of great YouTube videos and books for kids out there that have helped us along the way.)

This is where the cultural piece really comes in. It’s not just “our” holidays we talk about—it’s the idea that lots of families around the world celebrate differently, and that’s something to be curious about and proud of. By understanding our traditions, they’re better able to understand and respect others too.

(If you struggle with maintaining an open and calm demeanor during tough conversations, check out my tips on How To Be Patient With Your Kids.)

A Simple Guide for Interfaith Families

Blending two sets of traditions isn’t always seamless—sometimes it’s a juggling act, but it’s always worth it.

Your unique family celebration makes the holiday season special. By honoring both parents’ traditions, you’re not just doubling the joy and memories, you’re teaching your kids that being open to multiple cultures isn’t confusing—it’s a true gift. It helps them grow into those compassionate, curious, and respectful humans we all hope to raise.

And at the end of the day, holiday joy isn’t about what’s under the tree or how many candles are lit. It’s about honoring where we come from, celebrating what we share, and raising kids who see diversity as something to celebrate.

The other day, I caught myself grumbling about another busy week—carpools, meetings, late dinners. At the end of the week, we were supposed to go out for a friend’s birthday, and I completely forgot to plan a sitter. When I called my mom last minute to see if she could watch the kids, she said yes right away. And it hit me how rare and lucky this is.

I have both of my parents nearby, healthy and able to be part of my kids’ everyday life—cheering at soccer games, attending birthday parties, watching football together on weekends. And yet, sometimes I forget to show how much it means to me. That moment reminded me: gratitude isn’t just about feeling thankful, it’s about showing it—making sure the people who matter most actually hear it from us.

The Power of Voiced Gratitude

Gratitude becomes most powerful when it’s voiced. A whispered thank-you, a hug, a quick text—it’s these gestures that transform fleeting feelings into deeper connections. And research backs this up. Expressing gratitude not only strengthens relationships but also boosts happiness and even physical health.

But gratitude doesn’t have to start with grand gestures—it begins with noticing. Even simply writing down things you are grateful for each week can make you feel happier and more optimistic. Recognition is the first step and when we pause to name what’s good, we create space to then express it. And gratitude doesn’t have to be dramatic, it can live in the small stuff, too. Like gathering for a family meal, having a body strong enough to carry you through the day, or even laughing through the nightly debate over what’s for dinner. The more we practice seeing these everyday gifts, the more natural it becomes to voice our thanks.

And here’s where the real legacy lies: modeling it. When we voice our gratitude out loud, our kids notice. Psychologists say children who learn to express thanks build resilience, empathy, and stronger bonds.

Little Lifts You Can Try This Week

1. Say It Out Loud
Don’t assume your gratitude is understood. Tell your parents, partner, or kids one specific thing you’re thankful for this week. Even a simple “Thanks for showing up” can go further than you think.

2. Gratitude Cue for Kids
At dinner or bedtime, ask your kids: “What’s one thing today that made you feel happy or one moment you’re glad happened?” Encourage them to name people as often as things to help anchor gratitude in relationships.

3. Write It Down
Keep a small notebook or phone note where you jot one moment of gratitude each day. Reading back through even a week’s worth is a powerful reminder of abundance.

4. Health Check of Thanks

Pause once this week to notice something your body can do—carry groceries, chase your kids, breathe deeply. Gratitude for your health, however ordinary it feels, creates resilience when life gets hectic.

5. Shift to “Get To”

When you feel weighed down by routines—say to yourself, I get to pick up my kids today. I get to watch this soccer game. I get to tuck them in tonight. This tiny reframe pulls you back to the gift hidden in the grind.

Gratitude in Action

Gratitude isn’t meant to stay silent. When we voice it, we remind others—and ourselves—just how much the little things matter.

Your Little Lift Challenge: This week, tell someone how much they mean to you. Then, model the practice for your kids—it may just become their favorite daily habit, too.

If journaling speaks to you, jot down one small moment of gratitude each day. Or keep it simple: ask yourself—“If tomorrow looked completely different, what ordinary moment from today would I miss most?” Hold onto that thought—and let it shape how you move through this week.

1 . Lighting the Pumpkins!

Our friend, Tiffany, invited us over this year to carve our pumpkins and I am glad she did! It was the last weekend before Halloween and our last shot to get it done. I am so glad we did! I love how they turned out. Mine is Derpy from KPop demon Hunters, Rylee’s is Mushroom from Mario, and Reece’s is a Minion. They looked amazing! And of course we made our delicious pumpkin seeds, that make the perfect sweet and salty snack.

2. Halloween Spooks

Halloween last weekend was also such a blast! We had a large group with us and trick or treated in a friend’s neighborhood this year that was spectacular. Another year another costume in the books!

I also never posted a recap about Reece’s Monster Mash soccer tournament. It was such a fun one, Halloween themed so I loved it! Reece’s team played so hard and they won second place! Definitely improving against this harder division this year! Very proud of them,

And while we were at the tournament, we were looking for places to go to lunch with the team in between games, and we found a gem! Nueva Cantina was all decked out for Halloween with fun decor and themed drinks. And the food was so good! They accommodated our party of over 20 and service was amazing as well. If we are ever back in this area I am definitely planning to eat hear again. So good!

This one is for the dance moms! Since Rylee is in 6 numbers this comp season, I was looking for something to keep all her costumes and accessories organized. These are on Amazon and currently on sale for $19.99 for a pack of three. These are gonna be game changers for us this season and wanted to spread the word.

Thanks for stopping by this Fab Five Friday!

A few weeks ago my daughter asked me to help with a “settings update” on her Ipad. We don’t allow her unapproved apps or give her a phone, but she has an Apple watch to make calls and an iPad for school that she also plays online games with friends on. While adjusting a few features, I noticed a contact I didn’t recognize. It turned out she had swapped numbers with a classmate and found a way to add to her contacts without our permission.

It wasn’t a major breach of trust—but it was a moment that reminded me: digital boundaries are tested in small, creative ways. Instead of reacting with frustration, we paused, talked, and updated our tech rules together. That moment of discovery became an unexpected point of connection rather than conflict—and sparked ongoing conversations about trust and technology.

The Reality Check

Kids today live online in a way none of us did—so it’s helpful to see where things stand:

Young children (ages 0–8) now spend about 2 hours 27 minutes per day on digital media, on average.

In 2024, 51% of children 8 and under had their own smartphone or tablet.

Among tweens and teens, screen use for entertainment rose 17% from pre-pandemic to 2021, according to the Common Sense Media report.

These numbers illustrate that screens are deeply woven into childhood. And with emerging technologies—AI chatbots, disappearing messaging apps and location-sharing features—the landscape keeps shifting.

As author Devorah Heitner writes in Growing Up in Public, our kids aren’t merely “digital natives,” they’re digital pioneers navigating an internet even adults haven’t fully mapped. They don’t just need guardrails; they need guides. That’s how parents can help their children navigate this ever-changing terrain.

Little but Mighty Lifts for Digital Peace

Before we jump into the list, here’s the heart of it: connection beats control. These ideas keep dialogue open while setting healthy limits.

Draft a Family Tech Contract
Create a simple, evolving agreement together. Decide on when and where devices are allowed, what’s off limits, and revisit it as kids grow.

Keep Screens in the Commons
Keep gaming, browsing, and devices in common spaces rather than private rooms. This increases visibility and promotes casual conversation.

Teach Digital Street Smarts
Help kids begin to ask: “Who made this? Why? What’s the evidence?” Show them how to fact-check, spot scams, and recognize manipulated images or misinformation.

Model the Habits You Want to See
When you put your phone down at the table or limit your own scrolling before bed, those actions teach louder than words. Be the tech habits you hope to instill.

Learn from the Experts
Queue up the Ask Lisa Podcast, Episode 182: Untangling All Things Digital for Parents for a smart, balanced conversation on boundaries without shame. For deeper dives, explore more of Dr. Lisa Damour’s episodes and resources on co-creating tech limits.

Stay Curious, Stay Connected

Connection—not total control—is the real digital safety net.

By staying curious, keeping open lines of communication, and navigating boundaries together, you build trust stronger than any filter or app lock.

Your Little Lift Challenge: Ask your child one simple question: “What’s something online that surprised you—or made you curious—today?” Then listen—no judgment, just curiosity.

Those few curious minutes each day will build the kind of trust no parental control can match.
