I have totally been MIA this past week, getting back into the groove of things with the kids back in school.
It’s been exciting of course, and it brings new routine, which we are all getting used to. The kids did really great getting ready on the first day of school, they are pros by now! But I have got a few hilarious back to school lessons learned after our first week of school. I can’t stop cracking up about them when I think back to it all. Check it out!
Fuel up on more than your kids’ breakfast
Yes, do make sure you have enough gas to make it to school on the first day. It was day one when I looked down just as I was nearing the car line and I noticed my low gas indicator was on. I absolutely panicked. Nobody wants to be the person who runs out of gas in the car line. If you do, consider yourself an immediate outcast from society and accept total humiliation.
Don’t Care After for After Care
It’s definitely not ideal to start the first day of school realizing you haven’t signed your kids up for aftercare. And it’s most certainly not ideal to find out they are waitlisted because you waited till the last minute. Any day now we should be added to the list. Any day…
Coffee is Only Good on the Inside
It’s not hard to spill your coffee when the mug doesn’t fit into the cup holder. And especially when your rushing to fill up on gas before your first work meeting. So it’s probably best practice to bring a coffee mug that is not going to roll over onto your lap on your drive to the gas pump. And nobody wants to smell like sour coffee and rotten milk, bleh! Luckily I work from home and was able to throw my leggings in the wash right away. Yes, I put on pants for my work call, I know what your thinking!
Carpooling is better than Happy Hour
Almost. But man, when it works out it’s pretty damn amazing. After a week of pickups every single day, we decided, a friend of mine in the same aftercare boat, to split the days up and get some relief. And boy is it glorious. I was almost contemplating getting a mini van the other day in the pick up line just so I could push the automatic door button before the kids could get in the car. Interesting thought.
Making Forgetting to Make Lunch
The nights/mornings of not packing a lunch are over. Free school lunch has come to an end and now I am back to the joys of packing a lunch for both kids. Which so far I’ve forgotten to make every night and end up making it the morning of. It’s definitely best to make it the night before…. so having some money in their account is a great backup for when my lazy busy ass doesn’t feel like making it in the morning.
Backpacks & Lunch Boxes & Pencil Cases, Oh My!
Making sure we are all on the same page regarding our bag situation would have been helpful. If one kid has a lunch box, but wants a new one, then the other one leaves his lunch box at camp with the unknown retrieval of said lunch box until after school starts. I’m not sure there is a lesson to be learned here except girls in 4th grade do want a new backpack and boys need to be sure they have all their items when being picked up from the last week of summer camp.
T.G.F.A (Thank God for Amazon)
When I thought I totally had my shit together for the first weeks of school, I should have known right then I was kidding myself. I completely forgot about all the kids after school activities starting up again. Soccer cleats, ballet tights, leotards and shin guards. Thank God for Amazon!
And I am still laughing. This was a super fun way to let you all know how my week went, and really, overall—this is life! It’s all good and everything worked out in the end, but I enjoyed making fun of myself and letting you know how things really go. Reece did find his lunch box in case you were wondering, I’ve learned my lesson regarding the gas situation, and I know you are all sending me positive vibes for getting into aftercare. Which, right now I am thinking back and kind of thankful for this experience. I am able to spend more time with my kids and they really enjoy being home more (I hope they don’t get spoiled!) And I’m so lucky I’m able to help since I work from home and really close to the school. I am kinda feeling like a superwoman because I honestly didn’t think this is something I could ever do and it’s actually working out!
I hope everyone is have a great first few weeks of school! And let me know any funny stories you have along the way in the comments below!
Lol!
