One of the most fun things about owning a home, is being able to customize it and make it your own. And adding unique character to a room can really make it feel special.

In place of dining rooms, I’ve noticed more and more people creating multifunctional spaces, like in our home. Our dining room has been called “The Special Room” since Rylee was born. It’s been a mix of play room, office, music room, TV room and storage space. We recently upgraded it from playroom and office, to more of a sitting room with a DIY bookcase and window seat that helps hide a lot of the clutter that was once there. I love the update, but it’s still the one room in the house that I feel isn’t complete and needs work. It’s a perfect place to add some character and have fun with it. If you’re looking for some inspiration for your next project, here are 5 easy and affordable ways to add character to a room.

Create an accent wall with stick-on wall paper

Geometric Art Deco | Floral | Coastal Blue Glasscloth

Wallpaper is so back and it’s readily available in peel and stick rolls. Etsy has some beautiful options and I love that most are easily removable as well. This retro geometric pattern is so bold and fun, with a trendy mid-century vibe. I also love the delicate flowers for a more bohemian feel. And coastal is always a winner with this faux glasscloth pattern in a pretty blue. The options can be overwhelming, so try creating a mood board and pair the wallpaper with furniture and other items to make sure you will love how it will all come together in the end.

Have fun with patterns and pops of color

Colorful Rugs + Pillows | Bright Framed Art | Black & White Pouf

A really easy way to change the look of your room is playing around with different patterns and colors. You can keep your furniture and walls neutral and add in accessories like poufs, rugs, throw pillows and artwork. And the most fun part is, anything goes. If an item’s style or color catches your eye and brings you joy, try adding it to your space and see what kind of masterpiece you can create with different patterns and color pallets. Sometimes I feel like items I like just won’t work together, but a few of these photos just prove me wrong and I love how it looks.

Create a cozy, rustic space with faux brick

I love the way brick walls add character and rustic charm to a space. And if you don’t have Joanna Gaines to help you find a wall to expose, Faux Brickwork has really beautiful and affordable faux brick panels that can help achieve the same look. “Faux Brickwork are leaders in the supply of faux brickwork to the domestic and commercial world supplying faux brickwork to many luxury homes, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, offices and retailers.” Their product looks really nice and there are so many colors and styles to choose from when it comes to their faux brick wall panels. It’s really a neat idea to add that authentic looking brickwork to your home without any hassle of expensive building work. Their site also has installation instructions and a design team who can help answer any questions you have.

Whether you go with real plants or choose faux plants, adding greenery to your room can create such a peaceful and inviting space. It’s incredible what a bit of greenery does to a room to change it’s vibe. And incorporating real plants into your decor not only creates a zen-like feeling, but it will also improve your home’s indoor air quality. Which is a great plus!

Simply add curtains with a playful pattern

Try adding some colorful patterned curtains to your room to really make a statement. It’s a fun way to set the tone and add vibrancy and color to the room. Then, play around with neutrals and solids to complete the space. Adding curtains is so easy to install, and can make a room feel more complete. And it’s something that can easily be updated or switched out.

I hope you are as inspired as I am and enjoyed these easy and affordable ways to add character to a room.
